Our Care Philosophy

We firmly believe that the foundation of a caring environment comes from its people.

Our care homes are run according to our four values of care, which are displayed around both our homes in Garforth.

These values extend to both staff and residents, as a caring environment is one where people are in harmony with each other. The four values of care are:

Always seek to understand and respond to the wishes and needs of our residents.

Strive to create a team working environment where everyone can continuously learn and grow.

Be proud of our professional appearance, language, and behaviour.

Understand that if anyone makes a mistake, it will be treated in an open and transparent way as a learning experience for everyone.

Testimonials

  • The family have peace of mind

“My aunt became a resident of St Armands Court in December last year. She was welcomed by all the staff and easily settled into her new home. Her care and attention have been excellent. The management and staff treat her with respect and affection, and they patiently care for her needs. She appreciates their hard work. The family are happy where she is and have peace of mind she is well cared for. The management and staff are truly a dedicated team and nothing is too much trouble for them.”

Ann C, niece of resident (August 2019)

  • Friendliness, care, and support

“The overriding factor for the choice of this home was the friendliness, care, and support from the staff. They are approachable at all times if the family have any concerns, and we are satisfied Mum is looked after in a safe and caring environment.”

    – S.B., daughter of resident (June 2019)

  • "St Armands Court is excellent, they are all very helpful, kind and understanding to the residents and families. The home is well-run, and I feel happy knowing Mum is safe and well."

    - P B, Daughter of Resident/Service User (independently reviewed by Carehome.co.uk)

  • "My mum in law has now been a resident for around six weeks after deciding she felt unsafe and lonely in her own home, having fallen a few times. Her health wasn't good, and she struggled with self-care and medication. Since she has been at St Armands, she has started to feel better, and her health has improved. Whenever we visit, we are met with friendly staff who make us feel welcome. There are activities happening often, and residents seem happy to be included. As relatives, it's great to see our family members being involved. She is very sociable so needs this. She recently went out on a group trip to a theatre production, which was a fantastic opportunity for her. I have visited occasionally at lunchtime, and the meals look appetising and nutritious, and our family member always has a drink offered as well. We feel reassured that our family member is well cared for and is settling in well., they are all very helpful, kind and understanding to the residents and families. The home is well-run, and I feel happy knowing Mum is safe and well."

    - Liz D, Daughter-in-law of Resident/Service User (independently reviewed by Carehome.co.uk)

  • "Since my mum has moved into St Armands, she has been 100% better than when she went in. The care they have given her has been very good, and all the staff are excellent. If they are worried about anything medical, the doctor is soon called out and seen to."

    - C C, Daughter of Resident/Service User (independently reviewed by Carehome.co.uk)

  • "My father is really enjoying his stay at St Armands. He always says he is treated with respect, and the staff are always kind. He is totally happy with the facilities."

    - Carl C, Son of Resident/Service User (independently reviewed by Carehome.co.uk)

  • "Over 14-years of visiting my resident contact (service user), I have experienced a very satisfactory and considerate overall satisfaction of the treatment and care of duty my friend is being given. Contact can easily be made with the home, and should I be informed of any problems, this is done in a quick and sympathetic way."

    - Mary C, Power of Attorney of Resident/Service User (independently reviewed by Carehome.co.uk)

  • "I am very, very pleased with all the staff and care the home provides. I feel very lucky that the home had a place for my mum. Nothing is too much trouble for any of the staff. The home is spotless and has a happy environment, exactly what I want for my mum. Please, thank everyone at St Armands Court."

Anyone who cares for a parent or other relative with dementia knows the level of care it takes to provide a good quality of life.

It’s extremely challenging even if you’re fit and healthy and have the best of intentions.

The Hollies are located immediately next-door to St Armands Court at 27 Church Lane, Garforth.

The home specialises in caring for elderly people with dementia. We maintain strong links with local healthcare professionals, allowing specialist care for Alzheimer’s disease and dementia-related conditions.

    Amanda Metcalfe (Manager The Hollies)

Amanda has worked in Social Care since 1986 after leaving college at 18. Amanda always wanted to work with people and after a six week placement in a residential home, that was her calling.

Amanda started out working for Leeds City Council in a Dementia Home in Headingly which sadly closed and then worked in a few more homes before joining the Learning and Development Team in Merrion House. There she supported carers to achieve their NVQ.

After 22 years with LCC Amanda left, as her circumstances had changed and worked for two companies delivering NVQ training in Homecare and Residential care homes. Amanda then went on to be the Registered Manger of a mental health community support organisation. Prior to starting at The Hollies in January 2022, Amanda was a Homecare Manager for 9 years in the Wakefield area.

Over the years Amanda has gained NVQ 2, 3, 4 and 7, Assessor and Internal Verifier award and gained a large amount of experience and knowledge.

Amanda is passionate about the residents at The Hollies and feels privileged to be supporting and caring for them in their home.

    Testimonials

    • Treated like family

“Experience superb! Nothing is too much trouble for The Hollies staff, who are at all times attentive and caring. This applies to both the physical care and the emotional needs of the residents who are treated like and looked upon as family. For the 17+ months she was there, I always knew that she was being looked after and her self-contentment was obvious when visiting, which I did 4 times a week. I even felt able to go on holiday with a clear conscience! I cannot recommend it too highly!”

John T, husband of resident (June 2019)

    • Extremely caring

“The staff are all extremely caring and concerning when my mum is not feeling as good as usual. There is plenty for them to do to keep occupied. There is a good choice of food. The Hollies have recently changed ownership, and they have brought lots of new ideas and activities.”

Janet G, daughter of resident (August 2019)

    • "Both my husband was and my uncle is very well cared for."

      - G K, Niece of Resident/Service User (independently reviewed by Carehome.co.uk)

    • "My mother has been in The Hollies care home since December 2020, when it was nearing the end of the first lockdown, due to the Covid 19 pandemic. I myself have never been into the care home due to the national lockdown and stayed away from my mother until it was safer to visit her. When the restrictions were lifted, I was allowed to visit my mother but only as far as the conservatory which is situated at the end of the property. Following all the national guidelines. I can only comment on what I have seen from the conservatory and my mother's appearance, wellbeing and hygiene. I have observed that there seems to be a lack of stimulation and entertainment for the residents and I would love to see some of this in the near future. It must be a very long day from getting out of bed to back to bed just walking around or sitting in a chair, watching television. My mother seems disinterested in television and due to her being very introverted, she tends to sit back and do nothing."

      - Dawn R, Daughter of Resident/Service User (independently reviewed by Carehome.co.uk)

    • "The Hollies is well run and I know that my father is safe and well cared for. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff and they always make me very welcome when I visit Dad. My father enjoys the food and it is varied with regular drinks and snacks throughout the day, in addition to the main meal at lunchtime. I'm always kept informed if there are any issues with Dad and it's never a problem getting through on the telephone, which is very important to a family member. We were all kept informed by phone of any changes to government guidelines during the pandemic."

      Meet the Owner

Harvey Zemmel, owner of Garforth Residential, has 30 years’ experience as an advisor, operator and financier in care of the elderly.

Over the past three decades in healthcare, he has helped to raise the standard and quality of service in elderly care facilities across the UK. It remains his goal to this day.

He has personally been involved in projects involving scores of care homes, with many hundreds of beds and hundreds of staff.

Between 1997 and 2007, he also built a residential care home group from scratch to operating nine homes with hundreds of residents and staff.

      harvey Zemmel

Care and customer service always come first.

He believes that nowhere is this ethic more important than in the care of our elderly family members—but it is where some larger organizations struggle.

In both of the homes that came under his management in Garforth in 2018, Harvey has built teams that reflect his own values of care, where the needs of residents are foremost.

He considers this as the only way to provide the individual in care with quality of life and the family with peace of mind.
